There’s no rest for the talented at the Joffrey Ballet. While the company dancers were busy putting on Unique Voices, a whole other set of choreographers and trainees were busy preparing for the Winning Works: Choreographers of Color show coming up in March.

In this piece we created, we wanted to give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at choreographer Abdul Latif’s process teaching his piece, “a new work – A Year From Now Ago.”  Take a look as he works with the Joffrey Studio Company and Academy Trainees.

Abdul Latif is a graduate of Wesleyan University and NYU Tisch School of the Arts, an MFA graduate/scholarship recipient of the Alvin Ailey and Joffrey Ballet School, and a directing fellow at the T. Schrieber Acting Studio. Latif is currently a member of two dance companies: The Group, Donald Byrd’s contemporary ballet company, and Jennifer Muller’s “The Works” contemporary company. Latif is currently conceiving The NEXT Project, launching his urban-contemporary style. He has been a guest teacher at Steps on Broadway in New York, the Fendafor Festival in Brazil, and Moves Institute in St. Gallen, Switzerland. Latif was the resident recipient of Ballet Hispanico’s Institutito Coreografico in 2012.

Latif’s piece will show alongside two other choreographers’ pieces. The show will be at the Museum of Contemporary Art’s MCA Studio on March 7-8. Learn more about the show and get your tickets here:
